Now, the fascinatingly detailed investigations of Inspector Torigai echo those of Simenon's Maigret in a pared-down narrative shot through with political critique. Another recurrent note is the depression and the bitterness at the marginalization and derisory comments directed at the genre he loved best: speculative fiction. A couple of psychiatrists, several writers, publishers, adventurers, convention goers - the leading characters in the stories all suggest Wagner went for inspiration to the places he is most familiar with. "Why Not You and I" is a much better showcase for Wagner's talent, a collection of more subtle and more personal accounts of trauma and mental anguish that is all the more powerful for their real world setting and for their honesty hinting at autobiographical roots. It may be his most famous creation, but it is not representative of the artist's incredible range of interests and styles. Yet Kane is just one facet of Wagner's personality. Kane is a homage paid to Robert E Howard and Fritz Leiber, one anti-hero travelling the darkest paths of the human psyche. I became familiar with the work of Karl Edward Wagner by reading his series of dark sword & sorcery adventures featuring Kane, a man cursed with immortality and eternal failure for killing his (biblical) brother. They say all good friends must part someday,Īttributed to Janis Joplin, this melancholic tune is the leitmotif of this collection of genre transcending stories from one of the most underrated writers in the field of speculative fiction. The first two stories did not attract much notice. And so, her enchanted valley began to take shape, with the Moomin family at its heart, sensible, stable and supportive, along with a cast of little mythical creatures that children still love to identify with. But in place of children, she would have Moomins. The shock of the war convinced her that she should stay out of marriage - any sons would surely perish in some conflict or other. Despite the smiling images of her old age, this person who brought the world so much happiness did not seem to experience much of it herself. Instead she was attending to her first love, fine art, where her achievements tended to be ignored, much to her chagrin. It is tempting to attribute Tove's wonderfully clean-swept prose to these wind-buffeted surroundings, although her most famous work was already behind her by this time. One of the few who did attain it was Tove Jansson, author of the Moomin stories, who built her own home on a tiny uninhabited island in the Gulf of Finland. Creative artists often yearn in vain for total privacy. 6/12/2023 0 Comments One dark throne bookThere are many new locals, characters and plot lines to explore.
